In those days, Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, arose and disputed with Stephen. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they secretly instigated men, who said, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God." And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, and set up false witnesses who said, "This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law; for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us." And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. And the high priest said, "Is this so?" And Stephen said: "Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, and said to him, 'Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.' Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living; yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his posterity after him, though he had no child. "But it was Solomon who built a house for him. Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says, 'Heaven is my throne, and earth my footstool. What house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? Did not my hand make all these things?' "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it." Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him. But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God." But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him. Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep. | 8 في تِلْكَ الأَيَّامِ إِذْ كَانَ اسْتِفَانُوسُ مَمْلُوّاً إِيمَاناً وَقُوَّةً كَانَ يَصْنَعُ عَجَائِبَ وَآيَاتٍ عَظِيمَةً فِي الشَّعْبِ. 9فَنَهَضَ قَوْمٌ مِنَ الْمَجْمَعِ الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ مَجْمَعُ اللِّيبَرْتِينِيِّينَ وَالْقَيْرَوَانِيِّينَ وَالإِسْكَنْدَرِيِّينَ وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ كِيلِيكِيَّا وَأَسِيَّا يُحَاوِرُونَ اسْتِفَانُوسَ. 10وَلَمْ يَقْدِرُوا أَنْ يُقَاوِمُوا الْحِكْمَةَ وَالرُّوحَ الَّذِي كَانَ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ. 11حِينَئِذٍ دَسُّوا لِرِجَالٍ يَقُولُونَ: ((إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَاهُ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِكَلاَمِ تَجْدِيفٍ عَلَى مُوسَى وَعَلَى اللهِ)).12وَهَيَّجُوا الشَّعْبَ وَالشُّيُوخَ وَالْكَتَبَةَ فَقَامُوا وَخَطَفُوهُ وَأَتَوْا بِهِ إِلَى الْمَجْمَعِ 13وَأَقَامُوا شُهُوداً كَذَبَةً يَقُولُونَ: ((هَذَا الرَّجُلُ لاَ يَفْتُرُ عَنْ أَنْ يَتَكَلَّمَ كَلاماً تَجْدِيفاً ضِدَّ هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ الْمُقَدَّسِ وَالنَّامُوسِ 14لأَنَّنَا سَمِعْنَاهُ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ يَسُوعَ النَّاصِرِيَّ هَذَا سَيَنْقُضُ هَذَا الْمَوْضِعَ وَيُغَيِّرُ الْعَوَائِدَ الَّتِي سَلَّمَنَا إِيَّاهَا مُوسَى)). 15فَشَخَصَ إِلَيْهِ جَمِيعُ الْجَالِسِينَ فِي الْمَجْمَعِ وَرَأَوْا وَجْهَهُ كَأَنَّهُ وَجْهُ مَلاَكٍ. 1 فَقَالَ رَئِيسُ الْكَهَنَةِ: ((أَتُرَى هَذِهِ الأُمُورُ هَكَذَا هِيَ؟)) 2فَقَالَ: ((أَيُّهَا الرِّجَالُ الإِخْوَةُ وَالآبَاءُ اسْمَعُوا. ظَهَرَ إِلَهُ الْمَجْدِ لأَبِينَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَهُوَ فِي مَا بَيْنَ النَّهْرَيْنِ قَبْلَمَا سَكَنَ فِي حَارَانَ 3وَقَالَ لَهُ: اخْرُجْ مِنْ أَرْضِكَ وَمِنْ عَشِيرَتِكَ وَهَلُمَّ إِلَى الأَرْضِ الَّتِي أُرِيكَ 4فَخَرَجَ حِينَئِذٍ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ وَسَكَنَ فِي حَارَانَ. وَمِنْ هُنَاكَ نَقَلَهُ بَعْدَ مَا مَاتَ أَبُوهُ إِلَى هَذِهِ الأَرْضِ الَّتِي أَنْتُمُ الآنَ سَاكِنُونَ فِيهَا. 5وَلَمْ يُعْطِهِ فِيهَا مِيرَاثاً وَلاَ وَطْأَةَ قَدَمٍ وَلَكِنْ وَعَدَ أَنْ يُعْطِيَهَا مُلْكاً لَهُ وَلِنَسْلِهِ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ بَعْدُ وَلَدٌ. 47وَلَكِنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بَنَى لَهُ بَيْتاً.48لَكِنَّ الْعَلِيَّ لاَ يَسْكُنُ فِي هَيَاكِلَ مَصْنُوعَاتِ الأَيَادِي كَمَا يَقُولُ النَّبِيُّ: 49السَّمَاءُ كُرْسِيٌّ لِي وَالأَرْضُ مَوْطِئٌ لِقَدَمَيَّ. أَيَّ بَيْتٍ تَبْنُونَ لِي ؟ يَقُولُ الرَّبُّ وَأَيٌّ هُوَ مَكَانُ رَاحَتِي؟ 50أَلَيْسَتْ يَدِي صَنَعَتْ هَذِهِ الأَشْيَاءَ كُلَّهَا؟51((يَا قُسَاةَ الرِّقَابِ وَغَيْرَ الْمَخْتُونِينَ بِالْقُلُوبِ وَالآذَانِ أَنْتُمْ دَائِماً تُقَاوِمُونَ الرُّوحَ الْقُدُسَ. كَمَا كَانَ آبَاؤُكُمْ كَذَلِكَ أَنْتُمْ! 52أَيُّ الأَنْبِيَاءِ لَمْ يَضْطَهِدْهُ آبَاؤُكُمْ ؟ وَقَدْ قَتَلُوا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُوا فَأَنْبَأُوا بِمَجِيءِ الْبَارِّ الَّذِي أَنْتُمُ الآنَ صِرْتُمْ مُسَلِّمِيهِ وَقَاتِلِيهِ 53الَّذِينَ أَخَذْتُمُ النَّامُوسَ بِتَرْتِيبِ مَلاَئِكَةٍ وَلَمْ تَحْفَظُوهُ)). 54فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا هَذَا حَنِقُوا بِقُلُوبِهِمْ وَصَرُّوا بِأَسْنَانِهِمْ عَلَيْهِ. 55وَأَمَّا هُوَ فَشَخَصَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ مُمْتَلِئٌ مِنَ الرُّوحِ الْقُدُسِ فَرَأَى مَجْدَ اللهِ وَيَسُوعَ قَائِماً عَنْ يَمِينِ اللهِ. 56فَقَالَ: ((هَا أَنَا أَنْظُرُ السَّمَاوَاتِ مَفْتُوحَةً وَابْنَ الإِنْسَانِ قَائِماً عَنْ يَمِينِ اللهِ)). 57فَصَاحُوا بِصَوْتٍ عَظِيمٍ وَسَدُّوا آذَانَهُمْ وَهَجَمُوا عَلَيْهِ بِنَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ 58وَأَخْرَجُوهُ خَارِجَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَرَجَمُوهُ. وَالشُّهُودُ خَلَعُوا ثِيَابَهُمْ عِنْدَ رِجْلَيْ شَابٍّ يُقَالُ لَهُ شَاوُلُ. 59فَكَانُوا يَرْجُمُونَ اسْتِفَانُوسَ وَهُوَ يَدْعُو وَيَقُولُ: ((أَيُّهَا الرَّبُّ يَسُوعُ اقْبَلْ رُوحِي)). 60ثُمَّ جَثَا عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَصَرَخَ بِصَوْتٍ عَظِيمٍ: ((يَا رَبُّ لاَ تُقِمْ لَهُمْ هَذِهِ الْخَطِيَّةَ)). وَإِذْ قَالَ هَذَا رَقَدَ.وَكَانَ شَاوُلُ رَاضِياً بِقَتْلِهِ.

At that time, many followed Jesus, and he healed them all, and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; he will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick, till he brings justice to victory; and in his name will the Gentiles hope." | 15 في ذلك الزمان َتَبِعَ يَسُوع جُمُوعٌ كَثِيرَةٌ فَشَفَاهُمْ جَمِيعاً. 16وَأَوْصَاهُمْ أَنْ لاَ يُظْهِرُوهُ ، 17لِكَيْ يَتِمَّ مَا قِيلَ بِإِشَعْيَاءَ النَّبِيِّ الْقَائِلِ :18((هُوَذَا فَتَايَ الَّذِي اخْتَرْتُهُ ، حَبِيبِي الَّذِي سُرَّتْ بِهِ نَفْسِي. أَضَعُ رُوحِي عَلَيْهِ فَيُخْبِرُ الأُمَمَ بِالْحَقِّ. 19لاَ يُخَاصِمُ وَلاَ يَصِيحُ ، وَلاَ يَسْمَعُ أَحَدٌ فِي الشَّوَارِعِ صَوْتَهُ. 20قَصَبَةً مَرْضُوضَةً لاَ يَقْصِفُ ، وَفَتِيلَةً مُدَخِّنَةً لاَ يُطْفِئُ ، حَتَّى يُخْرِجَ الْحَقَّ إِلَى النُّصْرَةِ. 21وَعَلَى اسْمِهِ يَكُونُ رَجَاءُ الأُمَمِ)).
