The Lord said to his disciples, "Beware of men who will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. This will be a time for you to bear testimony. Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death; you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives." | 12 قال الرب لتلاميذه َقَبْلَ هَذَا كُلِّهِ يُلْقُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ وَيَطْرُدُونَكُمْ ، وَيُسَلِّمُونَكُمْ إِلَى مَجَامِعٍ وَسُجُونٍ ، وَتُسَاقُونَ أَمَامَ مُلُوكٍ وَوُلاَةٍ لأَجْلِ اسْمِي. 13فَيَؤُولُ ذَلِكَ لَكُمْ شَهَادَةً. 14فَضَعُوا فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ أَنْ لاَ تَهْتَمُّوا مِنْ قَبْلُ لِكَيْ تَحْتَجُّوا ، 15لأَنِّي أَنَا أُعْطِيكُمْ فَماً وَحِكْمَةً لاَ يَقْدِرُ جَمِيعُ مُعَانِدِيكُمْ أَنْ يُقَاوِمُوهَا أَوْ يُنَاقِضُوهَا. 16وَسَوْفَ تُسَلَّمُونَ مِنَ الْوَالِدِينَ وَالإِخْوَةِ وَالأَقْرِبَاءِ وَالأَصْدِقَاءِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ مِنْكُمْ. 17وَتَكُونُونَ مُبْغَضِينَ مِنَ الْجَمِيعِ مِنْ أَجْلِ اسْمِي. 18وَلَكِنَّ شَعْرَةً مِنْ رُؤُوسِكُمْ لاَ تَهْلِكُ. 19بِصَبْرِكُمُ اقْتَنُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ.

About that time, Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword; and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church. The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; and behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, "Get up quickly." And the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, "Wrap your mantle around you and follow me." And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him. And Peter came to himself, and said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting." | 1وَفِي ذَلِكَ الْوَقْتِ مَدَّ هِيرُودُسُ الْمَلِكُ يَدَيْهِ لِيُسِيئَ إِلَى أُنَاسٍ مِنَ الْكَنِيسَةِ 2فَقَتَلَ يَعْقُوبَ أَخَا يُوحَنَّا بِالسَّيْفِ. 3وَإِذْ رَأَى أَنَّ ذَلِكَ يُرْضِي الْيَهُودَ عَادَ فَقَبَضَ عَلَى بُطْرُسَ أَيْضاً. وَكَانَتْ أَيَّامُ الْفَطِيرِ. 4وَلَمَّا أَمْسَكَهُ وَضَعَهُ فِي السِّجْنِ مُسَلِّماً إِيَّاهُ إِلَى أَرْبَعَةِ أَرَابِعَ مِنَ الْعَسْكَرِ لِيَحْرُسُوهُ نَاوِياً أَنْ يُقَدِّمَهُ بَعْدَ الْفِصْحِ إِلَى الشَّعْبِ. 5فَكَانَ بُطْرُسُ مَحْرُوساً فِي السِّجْنِ وَأَمَّا الْكَنِيسَةُ فَكَانَتْ تَصِيرُ مِنْهَا صَلاَةٌ بِلَجَاجَةٍ إِلَى اللهِ مِنْ أَجْلِهِ. 6وَلَمَّا كَانَ هِيرُودُسُ مُزْمِعاً أَنْ يُقَدِّمَهُ كَانَ بُطْرُسُ فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ نَائِماً بَيْنَ عَسْكَرِيَّيْنِ مَرْبُوطاً بِسِلْسِلَتَيْنِ وَكَانَ قُدَّامَ الْبَابِ حُرَّاسٌ يَحْرُسُونَ السِّجْنَ. 7وَإِذَا مَلاَكُ الرَّبِّ أَقْبَلَ وَنُورٌ أَضَاءَ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَضَرَبَ جَنْبَ بُطْرُسَ وَأَيْقَظَهُ قَائِلاً: ((قُمْ عَاجِلاً)). فَسَقَطَتِ السِّلْسِلَتَانِ مِنْ يَدَيْهِ. 8وَقَالَ لَهُ الْمَلاَكُ: ((تَمَنْطَقْ وَالْبَسْ نَعْلَيْكَ)). فَفَعَلَ هَكَذَا. فَقَالَ لَهُ: ((الْبَسْ رِدَاءَكَ وَاتْبَعْنِي)). 9 فَخَرَجَ يَتْبَعُهُ وَكَانَ لاَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الَّذِي جَرَى بِوَاسِطَةِ الْمَلاَكِ هُوَ حَقِيقِيٌّ بَلْ يَظُنُّ أَنَّهُ يَنْظُرُ رُؤْيَا. 10فَجَازَا الْمَحْرَسَ الأَوَّلَ وَالثَّانِيَ وَأَتَيَا إِلَى بَابِ الْحَدِيدِ الَّذِي يُؤَدِّي إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَانْفَتَحَ لَهُمَا مِنْ ذَاتِهِ فَخَرَجَا وَتَقَدَّمَا زُقَاقاً وَاحِداً وَلِلْوَقْتِ فَارَقَهُ الْمَلاَكُ. 11فَقَالَ بُطْرُسُ وَهُوَ قَدْ رَجَعَ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ: ((الآنَ عَلِمْتُ يَقِيناً أَنَّ الرَّبَّ أَرْسَلَ مَلاَكَهُ وَأَنْقَذَنِي مِنْ يَدِ هِيرُودُسَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ انْتِظَارِ شَعْبِ الْيَهُودِ)).

The Lord said to his disciples: "This I command you, to love one another. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. It is to fulfill the word that is written in their law, 'They hated me without a cause.' But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God." | قال الرّبّ لتلاميذه:17 بهذا أُوصِيكُمْ حَتَّى تُحِبُّوا بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضاً.18 «إِنْ كَانَ الْعَالَمُ يُبْغِضُكُمْ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَبْغَضَنِي قَبْلَكُمْ.19 لَوْ كُنْتُمْ مِنَ الْعَالَمِ لَكَانَ الْعَالَمُ يُحِبُّ خَاصَّتَهُ. وَلَكِنْ لأَنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ مِنَ الْعَالَمِ بَلْ أَنَا اخْتَرْتُكُمْ مِنَ الْعَالَمِ لِذَلِكَ يُبْغِضُكُمُ الْعَالَمُ. 20 اُذْكُرُوا الْكلاَمَ الَّذِي قُلْتُهُ لَكُمْ: لَيْسَ عَبْدٌ أَعْظَمَ مِنْ سَيِّدِهِ. إِنْ كَانُوا قَدِ اضْطَهَدُونِي فَسَيَضْطَهِدُونَكُمْ وَإِنْ كَانُوا قَدْ حَفِظُوا كلاَمِي فَسَيَحْفَظُونَ كلاَمَكُمْ. 21 لَكِنَّهُمْ إِنَّمَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِكُمْ هَذَا كُلَّهُ مِنْ أَجْلِ اسْمِي لأَنَّهُمْ لاَ يَعْرِفُونَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَنِي.22 لَوْ لَمْ أَكُنْ قَدْ جِئْتُ وَكَلَّمْتُهُمْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَهُمْ خَطِيَّةٌ وَأَمَّا الآنَ فَلَيْسَ لَهُمْ عُذْرٌ فِي خَطِيَّتِهِمْ. 23 اَلَّذِي يُبْغِضُنِي يُبْغِضُ أَبِي أَيْضاً.24 لَوْ لَمْ أَكُنْ قَدْ عَمِلْتُ بَيْنَهُمْ أَعْمَالاً لَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا أَحَدٌ غَيْرِي لَمْ تَكُنْ لَهُمْ خَطِيَّةٌ وَأَمَّا الآنَ فَقَدْ رَأَوْا وَأَبْغَضُونِي أَنَا وَأَبِي.25 لَكِنْ لِكَيْ تَتِمَّ الْكَلِمَةُ الْمَكْتُوبَةُ فِي نَامُوسِهِمْ: إِنَّهُمْ أَبْغَضُونِي بِلاَ سَبَبٍ. 26 «وَمَتَى جَاءَ الْمُعَزِّي الَّذِي سَأُرْسِلُهُ أَنَا إِلَيْكُمْ مِنَ الآبِ رُوحُ الْحَقِّ الَّذِي مِنْ عِنْدِ الآبِ يَنْبَثِقُ فَهُوَ يَشْهَدُ لِي. 27 وَتَشْهَدُونَ أَنْتُمْ أَيْضاً لأَنَّكُمْ مَعِي مِنَ الاِبْتِدَاءِ».1 «قَدْ كَلَّمْتُكُمْ بِهَذَا لِكَيْ لاَ تَعْثُرُوا.2 سَيُخْرِجُونَكُمْ مِنَ الْمَجَامِعِ بَلْ تَأْتِي سَاعَةٌ فِيهَا يَظُنُّ كُلُّ مَنْ يَقْتُلُكُمْ أَنَّهُ يُقَدِّمُ خِدْمَةً لِلَّهِ.
